Judy Kranzler
Founder, Director of Pedagogy

Judy Kranzler has over 30 years of experience reviewing, developing and implementing reading and spelling curricula, materials, and multi-media for students with learning challenges, ELL students, as well as students who simply prefer to learn through physically active, musically vibrant, engaging activities.

Her personal experience of struggling with learning to read using the traditional "sit, look, listen, and memorize whole words," made her feel like she was L.D. By the time she finally felt she had mastered reading, she also knew in her heart that the way reading is traditionally taught discriminates against students who learn using other modalities other than the linguistic and visual venue.

Judy then studied and used many of the alternative ways to teach reading that were phonics and Orton-Gillingham-based. These methods teach a step-by-step progression of cumulative skills and teach the rules of how the sounds in English make words. Though they certainly made more sense, she found them to be equally unappealing. Why? They were just as much or even more tedium of "drill and kill," and memorization of rules. Her students inspired her and challenged her to create strategies, activities, and solutions that were student-friendly and fun. Over the next 15 years, as she continued to teach the students that no one else could reach, the Reading Revolution methodology was born.

Since 1990, Judy has been at the helm of Reading Revolution. She has administered many training and professional development courses to early childhood educators across the country. Her particular strengths lie in creating reading and spelling strategies that are truly teacher-friendly, kid-approved, fun and based on engaging games, songs, videos, and activities to teach every skill element at every level of reading.

In 1999, the Reading Revolution Company was formed to Fletcher's Place, based on the Reading Revolution methodology. Fletcher's Place is a multi-media curriculum for emerging readers, ages 3 to 8 in PreK, K and 1st grade. Judy's mission is to change the very fabric of how we think about acquiring reading so that it is an inspiring, exciting, and successful experience for all students. Her experience in teaching reading goes broad and deep. She has been:
  • Teacher at elementary school section of the Ecole Active Bilingue, International School of Paris, France, for English language learners

  • Teacher trainer at L'Institute pour la Perfection de Pedagogie, a teacher-training college affiliated with UNESCO, Paris, France

  • Founder and former Director of the not for profit Active Reading Clinic of Walnut Creek, California for students with mild to severe learning and language challenges

  • Teacher trainer at Cal State Hayward teaching the Reading Revolution methodology for academic or continuing education credits

  • Developer of curricula for youth and adult and teacher trainer for Project Second Chance, CA adult literacy programs

  • Developer of curricula and teacher for the Gifted and Talented Education program for elementary schools Walnut Creek School District, CA
